Our fleet will become greener and greener in the coming years. From 2026, only green company cars can enjoy a favourable tax regime.

In Flanders, all new cars must be electric from 2029. Due to the steep rise of green cars, more and more companies/people want to install charging stations.

?Should you notify your broker that you installed a charging station?

Not every insurer requires this, but it is advisable to let your insurer know that a charging station has been installed. As a policyholder it is always a good idea to report structural changes. Matter that the broker / insurer is aware and to ensure that you are not underinsured..

Does an electric car or charging station make your fire insurance more expensive?

No. Currently, the purchase of an electric vehicle or the installation of a charging station does not increase your fire insurance premium. It is true that the market of electric cars and charging stations is in full evolution. As a result, a lot can change about this topic. But the situation today is that your premium does not become more expensive.

What is covered?

If the charging station incurs damage due to fire or flooding, the damage to the charging station is covered. If the fire starts when an electric vehicle is being charged, that is also covered by the building's fire insurance. However, it may happen that the fire was caused by a third-party vehicle. In that case the damage can be recovered from the other party's vehicle insurance.

It is important to know that a defect or malfunction of the charging station, for example due to a manufacturing error, is not covered by the fire policy. If the charging station is at the origin of the fire, it is not covered. The damage to the charging station is then not consequential damage, because the appliance itself caused the damage. In this case, you can possibly rely on the legal assistance insurance to recover the damage from the manufacturer of the charging station. Damage to the building/home is covered and can be recovered from the manufacturer afterwards.

Which insurance will intervene if a fire occurs while charging your electric car in the garage of an apartment building?

The fire damage is then covered by the block policy of the apartment complex. It may well be that after the event a responsible third party is identified, e.g. the manufacturer of the vehicle or charging station. The fire insurer can try to recover damages from them. This will not change anything for the victims, who will be compensated directly via their home insurance policy.
